An orthosis (also known as a splint) is a device that is fitted to a part of the body and can have various functions such as supporting, stabilizing, correcting, immobilizing or relieving that part of the body.
An orthosis can be custom-made or supplied as standard. We call these standard orthoses “prefabricated”. The advantage of prefabricated orthoses is that they are available very quickly (stock). They come in a range of sizes, and can be individually adjusted if required. An orthosis can be individually custom-made from a plaster cast, 3D scan or other evaluation medium such as impression foam. For the upper limbs, an IMF (Immediated fitting) orthosis can be made. This technique requires no measurements (molding or other) and enables the orthosis to be made immediately by modeling a themo-plastic on the body part, while ensuring a high level of comfort. When choosing between prefabricated or custom-made orthoses, the success of the treatment depends on the dialogue between the orthotic and/or bandage technician, the patient, the prescribing physician and, if necessary, the physiotherapist and occupational therapist.
